what is the purpose of double reins and double bits?
is there a difference in a snaffle and a double rein shank pelhem bit? what reloes it do? is there is difference in a snaffle bit with one ring and a snaffle with three rings??
What Khayla said is so untrue, though a good guess! I’m not entirely sure what bit you are referring to, but I’ll try to answer.
Are you asking about a double bridle? That’s the one with the 2 separate bits that the first poster referred to. One bit is a regular loose ring snaffle (very mild bit) and the second is a curb bit (fairly harsh bit). These bridles are not used for very difficult to control horses, or trick horses. They are used for highly trained upper level dressage horses. The bridle has 2 separate bits because they each have a different action. The rider uses primarily the snaffle bit, which is milder, to direct the horse and maintain the frame. But the rider can also use the curb rein when they need more precision, and to encourage collection. Only very expert riders with very educated hands should attempt to ride in a double bridle. If the rider has rough hands they could severely damage a horse’s mouth with this bridle.
A pelham bit is sort of like a hybrid of the double bridle, if you were to take the 2 bits (snaffle and curb) and put them together into one. Just like the double bridle, you ride with 2 separate reins. The snaffle rein is milder and acts mostly like a regular snaffle, while the curb rein has a harsher action. You cannot give such precise aids with a pelham as you could with the 2 bits separately, so you do not see dressage riders using these bits. Instead, you see people who want to have more control of their horse who gets strong. Again, the rider can ride mostly using the snaffle rein, but when the horse is being difficult the rider can use the curb rein more to get the horse’s attention. Many people incorrectly just pull equally on both reins, but this is incorrect.
I think the snaffle bit with three rings you are referring to is actually an elevator bit. Does it look like this: http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-0102&ids=962213286. This bit can be used with one rein, but is more usually ridden with 2 reins. The one rein going to the main (larger) ring is the snaffle rein and is milder. The one going to the lower ring is harsher for more control on a strong horse. The upper ring is attached to the cheekpiece and adds poll pressure to the leverage effect. This bit is often used by jumpers and cross-country riders.
I think all horses really should be ridden in a simple snaffle bit, but in some situations that is not possible. When cross country jumping, foxhunting, or jumping sometimes a strong horse will need a more harsh bit for the rider to keep control, especially outside of a riding arena. The nice thing about having the double reins is that you can ride most of the time on the mild snaffle rein, and use your harsher rein only when needed. That way, you spare your horse’s mouth and still stay safe.
