Explaining the Different Kinds of Horse Blankets and Their Uses
One piece of equipment a horse owner will never forget to leave behind is their horse blanket. They are an essential part of any owners’ horse gear. They are available in different styles and made from a variety of materials. There are numerous types of different blankets available and each with its own specific role to play. They are important additions to your tack room while helping your animals remain healthy and comfortable no matter what type of weather conditions Mother Nature throws at them.
The main purpose of horse blankets is to keep the horse warm in colder or wet weather. However, it isn’t uncommon for horse owners to use them as a way of combating flies and other pests. They are either found in styles such as quilted and lined with wool or thinner and made from a breathable material. Some are even quite resistant to water.
Blankets differ in both weight and material. The blanket you’ll want will be dependent on where and how you’ll be using it. Since putting a blanket on a horse can provide so many different and wonderful benefits, it is a good idea to always have several different blankets handy. You’ll never know when one might meet your horse’s needs.
The two most basic styles of horse blankets are stable blankets and turn-out blankets. Stable blankets tend to be thicker and warmer and commonly used when the horse is kept in the barn. Turn-out blankets are more often used on horses which spend a greater amount of time outside in the elements and are fitted with straps so they don’t come loose in the rain and wind.
There are a few other types of blankets available for covering horses. The difference in them is dependent on its use. For example, anti-sweat blankets are used for cooling down sweaty and physically active horses. They are the opposite of stable blankets in that they are cooling blankets instead of warming blankets.
Some horse owners also implement sheets into their horse’s daily routine. They are usually used while the horse is exercising or exerting a good amount of physical energy. They are worn under the saddle while you are riding. You’ll also fine rain sheets for horses spending time in the elements. These sheets are made from waterproof materials.
As you can see, there is a horse blanket out there to meet any one of your horse’s needs. As long as you do the right amount of research into which type will suit you best, you’ll horse will be fine.
