Tall boot questions for English showing?
I have a couple questions about tall boots. I have always had wider calves so when I got out of the Air Force things had gotten worse, so I purchased zip up tall boots.
1. How much of the zipper should show? Down by the sole and around the ankle the zipper is hidden, but the zipper shows the entire length of the boot up the back. I think it looks pretty hideous. Is this how all zip up boots are? Does the zipper on the front of the boot make any difference?
2. Again with the wide calves. I know I can get tall wide calf pull-on boots, but how do I keep my pants from riding up to my knees when I pull the boots on? That issue is why I got the zipper ones in the first place. 
I need some answers ASAP, I want to show again this year but would like to get some nicer boots.

I have extra wide calves, so I know where you are coming from.
To pull on boots without pulling your breeches to your knees, put your socks over them, not under. If you get queen sized knee highs, they work well, or you can use those fun ones. The nylon helps them slide on better. Some of the boot socks have cotton feet and nylon/lycra tops, and that is really wonderful.
Zippers are another thing. The zippers that go right up the middle of the front are polo boots traditionally. I had some zips put in my boots by a really good boot maker and they were about 3/4 front, sort of on the inside a bit. That zip never hit the saddle and was great.
Those boots are now in boot heaven, and the new boots have zips up the back too. It’s easier from a design and building point of view, and much worse from a saddle protection point of view. I know you aren’t supposed to grip with the back of your legs, but lets face it, we’ve all done it, and it only takes once to mess your saddle up but good.
What has worked best for me were the zips just inside of the front center. So you get pull on boots that fit, but want to get in and out of them easier, so you have zips put in by somebody who really only works on good english boots, like http://ridingbootrepair.com It costs a hundred dollars, but they are much nicer than what your local guy can do.
Now here’s another option. If you are riding Dressage, USDF just this month passed a rule that ALLOWS HALF CHAPS to be used in training and first level!!!!!!!! They must be smooth, not suede, but those of us who show infrequently at the grass roots level, and play and have fun and not spend $800 on custom boots!!!! That is a US national rule, so at recognized shows, you can do it. The judge may prefer to see you in tall boots, but sometimes they just gotta tough it.
