Cherwell In Oxfordshire
Cherwell is a local government district of northern Oxfordshire, formed in April 1974 and named after the River Cherwell. The major towns in the district are Banbury, Bicester and Kidlington.
Banbury is Oxfordshire’s most northerly town and is famous for its Banbury Cakes (similar to an Eccles Cake), and its associations with the nursery rhyme ‘Ride a Cock Horse’. A bronze statue of the ‘fine lady upon her white horse’ has been erected in the town at the corner of South Bar and West Bar.
The town has a £58 million shopping centre, Castle Quay, which boasts over 100 shops, including big name stores, cafes, specialist shops and restaurants.
For more local produce, a general market is held twice a week and a Farmers’ Market on the first Friday of the month.
Banbury is surrounded by beautiful hills and countryside. It is a pleasant Oxfordshire town that is well worth a visit.
Bicester is the second largest town in Cherwell District and it was established in the sixth century. So whats on in Bicester? Today it is famous for Bicester Village – a designer outlet village attracting thousands of people. The town also has one of the largest garden centres in the UK.
Bicester has many areas of historic interest, including the market square that boasts buildings in many architectural styles.
Kidlington is one of Britain’s largest villages and it is mentioned in The Domesday Book. The Church of St Mary the Virgin, was mentioned in the book and it is now a protected grade I listed building. The church has fine medieval glass and the spire (known as ‘Our Lady’s Needle’) is very attractive.
Cherwell is a thriving district of Oxfordshire. It has a good mix of the old and the new and it has lovely rolling hills and countryside to explore. Whilst most tourists visit Oxfordshire for the city of Oxford, with its university heritage, it is also worth exploring the towns and villages of Cherwell district.
