Is Chiquito Is Any Good?
The UK has a rich, diverse culinary culture, London is regarded as one of the top cities in the world for eating out. While Paris has it’s sophisticated eateries and brasseries serving up much ridiculed delicacies such as horse, frog legs and snails, London’s speciality is its sheer range of eating out options available. The large number of foreign communities settling in London are a huge influence on this trend and areas with a typically high Caribean culture like Notting Hill for example, will serve up specialties like curried goat and jerk chicken. The best restaurants are often small, family owned operations but this culinary diversity has trickled down into mass culture, meaning there are opportunity’s for entrepreneurs to capitalize on this fact open up franchises catering to specific tastes.
Chiquito is one such chain and serves up Mexican food in lively surroundings, very it much in the same vein as the likes of TGI Fridays, Nandos and Pizza Hut. Since a Chquito’s recently opened up in my hometown, I thought it’d be necessary for me to visit and form my own opinion on this seemingly Authentic Mexican dinner. The signage and interior are heavily stylized with wood, terracotta flower pots and various rusty odds and ends in a window display. It sounds a little too much but I found it gives the place character without being overly obtrusive. It’s all very forced but it works in some ways and will certainly attract the crowds.
The menu was surprisingly large, although to my disappointment it featured a section full of generic dishes for those unable to handle the Mexican spice, dishes like this simply did not seem to be consistent with the burritos and tacos on offer, diminishing the authenticity somewhat. I didn’t let this deter me however and I went for a beef fajita, this comes with tequila sauce, not as sickly as it sounds, and some of the greatest spicy rice I’ve tasted. Foodies will probably hate Chiqutos but it will please the layman out for some food, drinks and merriment. Don’t worry if you don’t have much prestamos de dinero because Chqiuto’s won’t drain your solicitar credito!
