How do you make a new straw cowboy hat look old?
Just bought a new cowboy straw hat and want to make it look old. The straw is white and I want it to look “Tan” or “sunburned” Besides having sit out in the sun for 3+ months does anyone know how to age it?
Hats take on character from getting wet (i.e. sweat and rain) and then drying, forming to the wearer’s head.
Wet the hat and wear it until it is relatively dry. Use brewed tea to wet it, if you want to darken it. Soak it or brush it on with a house paint brush. You want to be forming the brim while it’s wet until it takes whatever cowboy shape you’re looking for, i.e. slouch front or rolled sides. “Sunburned” is just dark lacquer they sprayed on the edges in china before they shipped it to Walmart, it doesn’t occur in nature, except as a dark sweat stain that shows through the sweat band when you work, but I’m guessin’ you won’t have to worry about that, lol.
Not only will it look old, but it will fit much better. If you want it to last you can rub a little glycerin into it now and again. That keeps it from “blowin’ out” (breaking the straw at the fold) from pinching the hat above the forehead when you take it off or put it on.
If it just some costume piece from a cheap hat, don’t worry about the glycerin, and you probably want the broken straw. In that case just pinch the front top rim (before you wet it) to get the proper down and out scarecrow look.
