Show Saddles – What do you prefer? Rico, Billy Cook, Circle Y, Chavez?
I’m looking to buy a new show saddle for horsemanship and pleasure, one with cut out/close contact fenders and over sized skirts, and probably a 17″ seat. I expect to pay a pretty penny for it, but I’d like to know what you would suggest. I currently own an older Tex Tan, a good saddle for the money. I also have a Billy Cook barrel saddle, which I think is equally good for the money. I personally like Rico saddles, and Dale Chavez’s as well. I’ve heard bad things about different silver’s on saddles as well, any horror stories? Ideally, my perfect show saddle would have barely any silver, I’m more into good quality leather and beautiful craftsmanship and tooling. But its difficult to find a great show saddle without the silver.. Too bad. Any suggestions/ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks.
One of the top name in Western saddles is Blue Ribbon. They are famous for their great equitation seat for the rider, and a medium wide tree that fits most stock horses. Having said that, my current show mare does not fit my Blue Ribbon saddle, so you need to treat each horse and saddle as an individual. If possible, try to test out each saddle before you are commited to buying, or you’ll end up like me. I spent huge money on my beautiful saddle only to find its pinching my mare’s withers!!!
I would personally buy a saddle that is going to retain its value so you will find it easy to resell. So definetely stick to brand names if possible. Billy Cook is known as an intermediant type saddle, you will be able to sell it but it won’t go for nearly the money as the Chavez or Blue Ribbons. Circle Y are the same, good quality factory made type saddles, but not nearly as expensive as some of the others. You might consider a “Bobs” saddle, that is another big name in the show world.
And if you want a show saddle without too much silver, you would do best to custom order one. If you were to buy a new, well-silvered up Blue Ribbon saddle you could expect to pay between $6000-$12000. Alot of money (I bought mine second hand, let me assure you!) If you get a custom ordered working Blue Ribbon saddle you will get the exact same tree, seat and quality, and pay about $3500 or less. If you buy a working saddle on eBay the cost will be even lower. That way you can put as much or little silver on it as you want, and pick the patterns and such. And you will always be able to resell your Blue Ribbon or other custom saddle because it will be attractive to a wide group of horse people.
