Race Has A New Favorite: Kentucky Derby Contenders And Odds

The list of Kentucky Derby contenders got shorter from the top Sunday as Eskenderaya, the favorite, was pulled by trainer Todd Pletcher from the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 1. The money now among this year’s Kentucky Derby contenders is considered by horse expert Joe Drape of the New York Times to be last year’s two-year-old champion Lookin at Lucky, trained by the three-time Derby winner Bob Baffert. Eskenderaya’s exit marks the second year in a row the pre-race favorite has been scratched from the list of Kentucky Derby contenders because of a leg injury.

Contenders and odds of the Kentucky Derby

The final list of contenders for the Kentucky Derby will probably be done Wednesday when the post positions are announced at Churchill Downs. Kentucky Derby odds and contenders, in a list posted Monday on sports-odds.com has 38 horses that are considered likely to race. Eskenderaya, before being scratched was at 2/1 odds. 6/1 was Sidney’s Candy. Lookin at Lucky is listed at 13/4, Dublin at 10/1 and Awesome Act at 12/1. Bets wants extra cash from longshots including Prince William at 200/1 and Call Shot at 150/1.

Other Kentucky Derby contenders and odds

Other Kentucky Derby contenders in this year’s race trained by Pletcher include the Louisiana Derby winner, Mission Impazible (30/1); Super Saver (15/1), the Arkansas Derby runner-up; Rule (20/1), the third-place finisher in the Florida Derby; and Discreetly Mine (50/1),the Risen Star victor; . Sunday, in a news conference Pletcher said he may also consider entering the horse Interactif (40/1) and the filly Devil May Care, a horse among the favorites to win the Kentucky Oaks to be run at Churchill Downs on Friday.

Kentucky Derby, bargains, big money

Contenders in the Kentucky Derby are a rare group of horses that get their way into contention by amassing payday cash. Only 20 out of 30,000 to 40,000 thoroughbred horses born every year in North America can be in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Setsuko still went for that small price even though his grandfather, Pleasant Colony, won the 1981 Kentucky Derby and Preakness.
