Specialized Sirrus Sport Review
The Specialized Sirrus Sport is the second rung up the ladder in the Sirrus range. It comes with a somewhat upgraded set of components, the main one being an aluminium rather than steel front fork. According to the manufacturers, the Sport keeps to the design brief, for “exercise, commuting, or hitting the open road” but will prove fast enough for competitive events. What is the makeup of the Sirrus Sport?
The Sport features the same A1 aluminium frame as the basic Sirrus. The Sport features the classic Sirrus curved and tapered tubing, finished in eye-catching black and grey paintwork. Road vibration is dealt with by the 28mm tyres, and the aluminium frame results in a lightweight agile bike.
As already referred to, the improved front fork is the main upgrade to the basic Sirrus. The fork’s aluminium legs are stiffer than the steel, resulting in weight saving and an increase in responsiveness. You can of course fit mudguards and pannier if you wish.
The Shimano brakes and drivetrain components on the Sirrus Sport are all of slightly improved spec over the basic Sirrus. Gear selection is by EZ Fire, the thumb and forefinger levers clicking up and down one gear per click. The triple chainset and Shimano 8-speed cassette gives you a total of 24 gears to choose from.
The specifications of the rest of the bike do not differ significantly from the basic Sirrus. The handlebar on the Sport is a flat alloy. It’s fitted with comfortable gel grips to eliminate vibration. The Riva 155mm saddle from body Geometry should provide comfort for hours on the road.
The All-Condition tyres feature Flak-Jacket puncture resistance. They have plenty of tread for off-road, but low rolling resistance on the tarmac.
The pedals on the Sport are flat composite, so can be used with normal shoes or trainers. The chainguard will keep your trousers clean as well. Upgrading the pedals would not be difficult though.
The Specialized Sirrus Sport is a useful step up from the entry-level Sirrus for those who are looking for some extra performance. It’s priced a bit higher. The bike is obviously a Sirrus – the stylish frame with its beautiful finish give the game away. For commuting or out on the open road we don’t think the Sirrus Sport can be faulted, unless you want to go up the range to the Elite and beyond…
