Halter Weanling
I need to know about raising foals?
I am writing a children’s book (age range 6-11) about a foal (a colt to be more exact the colts age range through this book will be his first seconds to 4 1/2 years old). I am going to start to take horse lessons, but I know that you don’t ride horses until they are 3 1/2 or 4! So I need cute story’s about foals but I also need to know how to raise one! I need a layout or like a step by step walkthrough! I need to know about food, weanling, halter breaking, and all that stuff! Please tell me what age I should teach them each thing! Also at what age can I start teaching horses tricks like standing up, kneeling, sitting, laying down, etc I know that it should be like 4 years or maybe 5! I would also like to know who I could ask about this stuff! Thank you all in advance!
The colt will be a Hanoverian and will be trained in jumping!
Foals stay with their mother for the first 6 months. Then they are weaned. To bond well with the foal you need to spend a lot of time with it from the day that it is born. We had a mare that had a foal and we spent about 4 hours with it each day just patting it everywhere and teaching tricks. foals usually start eating within 1 week of being born but don’t eat much at first. They can be taught tricks like standing up, kneeling, sitting, laying down etc from day one. It is a lot easier teaching a horse tricks when they are small. we halter broke our foal at 2 months old. She was scared at first and rubbed against everything and threw herself to the ground a few times till she learnt that the halter wasn’t going to kill her. When we weaned the foal we put her in a seperate paddock throughout the day and in a seperate stall in the night. You can start breaking in a horse at about 3 years old but before that you can still get them used to saddles and bridles and if your training a horse in jumping you would also lunge it and teach it to jump obstacles before breaking it in too.
