Halter Yearling
Haltering a yearling that has never been touched before I got him!?
I have a new yearling, as some of you know, George. Anyways…I am looking for tips on getting him haltered.
What I have been doing so far is just spending time with him, petting him and getting him use to me. I was going to try and halter him this weekend but decided against it. Figured that was moving too fast for a poor guy that hasn’t ever had human contact before.
But I am looking for other tips too. I don’t hand feed treats so those kinds of tips won’t work for me. And I don’t believe in treat training.
So far, he lets me pet his neck and back…I can start at the ears and move down. That is what I have been doing so far and for only 10 to 15 minutes at a time so that I can walk away after petting him and not have him walk away from me…hope that makes sense.
I’d be messing with just a cotton lead rope. Also…just petting, stroking, talking…and laying the rope over the neck. If he moved away…I’d just let him and continue to talk and pet him. Letting him smell the rope. Working my way to placing the rope higher up his neck until it just ‘sets’ behind his ears. Never tightening it…just laying it over.
Once he was all right with that, I’d probably lay it on the neck behind the ears…then loop it over his nose. Again…no tightening, just getting him used to having something touching those areas.
I would also at this time…be working on his ears. I would bend and stroke them if possible. Think about it…how many times do we bump those ears and bend them when we halter and bridle?
If he just stood there while I looped over his nose…I would take that as a sign to try a real halter. I’d let him ‘hear’ it jingle and let him ‘check it out’ as much as he wanted. I’m not a treater either…I use my voice and body language as the reward. Approval in the voice and ‘grooming’ by scratching and stroking.
Also…awesome for YOU stopping and walking away before he decides to. And if he let me put the halter on…I would have to watch and see how to proceed next. If he just stands there…I’d take it back off immediately and end the lesson. If he runs off with it…I’d probably encourage him to come back, pet and stroke, fiddle with the halter without actually removing it, before I actually removed it. I would probably leave the halter hanging where he could check it out on his own too.
I might just introduce the halter by carrying it around with me…letting him hear it jingle. Having it over my arm while I was petting him. Letting it bump him and letting him ‘look’ at it. Maybe a few days of this until he just doesn’t care about the ‘noisy bulky thing’ attached to my arm.
I would just have to watch and see how he is responding to different approaches. *What a bonus if he just puts his nose in it!!*
