History shows that the first immigrant to come to the city was a physician. As part of an expedition to explore the area and community, this particular doctor was merely passing through the region. Of course, he didn’t find enough customers to support a practice, so he returned to his home where the larger population allowed him to have a lucrative practice.
At the time several physicians were located in the area, but they found it difficult to eek out a living from the sparsely populated country as money was in short supply. With the onset of the Civil War, they gathered their medical equipment together and moved out. Those nineteenth century doctors who remained behind became heroic in their dedication to the community. In that era, the study of medicine demanded of those men who pursued it was not an easy path. It was a rough job which was defined by uncertain compensation, hours which were brutal and precious little time off, if they got any at all. There were a few patients who were able to pay the doctor for his services, but many who simply could not.
Doctors were often woken during the night to attend to a sick patient. The stamping of feet on his front porch and furious beating on the door would awaken the poor doctor and his sleepy neighbors. The early doctors would not always get monetary compensation for their work. Frequently, the patients had to settle their debt with corn or other produce or by performing labor for the doctor. In order to supplement their meager salary, some hardworking doctors sold homemade medicines in addition to their practice. This particular pioneer doctor was one of those men.
An alternate physician who possessed numerous degrees and post graduate awards, marketed, vended, and made various treatments in the days when ethics proved to be more relaxed. He had a neuralgia and headache medicine that seemed to work well. For the sum of 10 cents, the patient would get three doses of the treatment and the promise that his pain would stop in less then 20 minutes.
Other physicians earned some extra cash through starting their own drug stores. The very first drugstore in that city’s area was opened right on main street by one doctor. Once this first one sprouted up, three more doctors followed suit and opened competing drugstores. After the first hospital in the area was built, doctors started to enjoy an improved working environment, and more hospitals were built in the next few years. In time, the physicians’ ethical code of conduct and motto were developed – clear signs that the standards of the medical profession were improving. It was this combination of medical expertise and upgraded medical facilities that increased the proficiency and integrity of hospitals.
