Achieving The Ultimate Prize In Horse Photography
A horse can jog in his sleep, but can he pose? The only person in the world who can do the impossible is a lady photographer from Pasadena, California, whose photos are hung in the homes of famous people. At Pasadena City College (PCC), she borrowed her first camera, and now her motor home office travels all over the state to cover events, and she even had the privilege of shooting British Princess Anne at the Montreal Olympics. She graduated from Pasadena High School and then took photography classes at PCC, for which practicing on horses was the most practical. Since she was 10 years old, she practically lived at the Eaton Canyon Riding Stables. The stables were her practice grounds on weekends, where she used her borrowed camera for assignments. She gave up music, art, and journalism once her first photo sold, putting her on the road to a career in horse photography.
At a horse show in Santa Barbara she was hired as assistant to two famous equestrian photographers with whom she travelled all over the country for two years, bringing horses in focus at shows, tracks and state fairs. Her next gig was with another photographer pair, who kept to California circles. Today, she uses a Swedish camera with German lens, and her mother takes care of the business side of things.
With her, active shots are the best, like six-foot jumps and winning races by the nose. For formal shots, she has them down on all fours. And there are some real hams among the horses. She discovered that some of them seem to take one look at the camera and assume the proper pose like perking up their ears and lifting their heads high. When it comes to taking a good horse photo, a few pointers will help. Mid-air with legs bent at the right angle is the best bet for hunters and jumpers. Tennessee walkers pictured at their best have high action with their front hoofs and an over reaching hoof with their hind legs. A low slide is the best angle for a stock horse, and high head and legs is the best angle for a saddle horse. Some of her prized pictures are of the Peruvian Paso, almost an endangered species, whose aficionados are carefully trying to perpetuate the colorful breed from South America. It is best to snap a shot when you see their forelegs roll toward the outside. With their riders in traditional white ponchos and their elaborate bridles and saddles, the Paso is a photographer’s pet.
Because of her work, she has come in contact with many celebrity horse lovers. Photography has brought her face to face with royalty. She was able to get close to the Queen, of all people, after photographing Princess Anne at the Montreal Olympics. She asked Queen Elizabeth how it felt to watch her daughter take the high jump, and she said it made her quite nervous. Even though she spends her free time swimming, back packing, bicycling, panning for gold and sometimes even riding a horse, she felt she needed to switch up her horse photographs with fork lift pictures.
