Horse Tack: Stirrups
Stirrups are the pair of lightweight frames or rings that attach to the saddle via a strap and hold the feet of the horseback rider in place. The strap that attaches to the stirrups is adjustable, giving the rider freedom of movement in their legs. Stirrups aid in the mounting of the animal, they support the rider once mounted, increase control of the animal and allow the rider to stay firmly in the saddle. saddlery In order to maintain the rider’s center of balance, the stirrup strap is adjustable.
Most modern stirrups attach to the saddle via a strap, called stirrup leathers, that allow the rider free movement of their legs. The stirrups do not attach to the saddle itself; rather, they attach to the stirrup leathers which are adjustable, allowing the rider to sit comfortably, maintain their center of balance and move their legs with the motion of the horse. The stirrups attached to western saddles, unlike on English saddles, are not designed to give way in case the rider falls off.
Safety stirrups, like the name implies, are meant to detach in case of a fall. With the outer branch made of a thick rubber band and leather, safety stirrups are also called peacock stirrups. If the rider were to fall off the mount, safety stirrups let the rider’s feet come free. One problem, however, that can make safety stirrups less safe than their name implies is the fact that the rubber band can break suddenly.
Traditional stirrups are comprised of what are called the stirrup irons. This is the frame or ring through which the rider’s feet go and what supports the legs. The tread, inner and outer branches and the eye are the parts of the stirrup irons which is tied to the stirrup leathers. Horse Supplements The tread is grooved for the sole of the shoe. Horse Rugs The sides of the irons are made up of two vertical standing pieces called the branches.
An integral part of horse tack, stirrups are both useful and necessary. With a very long history, stirrups made modern horseback riding possible. They let the rider mount the horse, keep balanced and under control.
