Beginner’s Tips For Riding Horses
Learning to ride a horse isn’t easy. There are so many things that you need to remember and they aren’t always related to the horse. Never start until you are sure that you are wearing the proper clothing and a correctly fitting helmet. Not performing simple checks from the beginning could not only put you in danger, but also potentially invalidate any claim you may have to make on your horse insurance policy. Now the next steps can be undertaken.
How to mount a horse correctly.
When the bridle and saddle have been correctly fitted and double-checked, stand to the left of the horse. After putting your left foot in the stirrup take hold of the horse’s mane (the withers) not the saddle which could easily slide. Then keeping both of your hands on the front of the horse or on the cantle (back) of the saddle, push up and swing your right leg over the back of the horse, being careful not to kick the horse, so that you seat yourself comfortably in the saddle. When comfortable, reassess your grip on the reins and hang both your legs down near the stirrups. Make sure they are at the correct length by having the stirrup reach your ankle. Then you should be able to just slide your feet into the stirrup whilst your foot is raised a few inches. Any balancing adjustments should be made by you not by the horse.
When you are happily seated…
Keep your upper back straight and lower back relaxed. Adopt an upright posture while in the saddle. Keep looking ahead for things which may spook your horse. Take one rein in each hand; left rein in the left hand, right rein in the right hand. The reins should go in under the little fingers and be tucked in under all four fingers. Always hold the reins in place with your thumbs against your forefingers with your thumbs up, palms down and each hand as wide apart as the neck of the horse with them just in front of the saddle and above of the horse. You slacken the reins by lifting your thumbs and letting them slide through. Shorten the reins by taking up extra length with the opposite hand.
Your first steps at riding.
Squeeze your lower legs when you want the horse to start a slow walk, the first gait. Stop after a few minutes to make sure that the girth is correctly adjusted. The girth will need tightening if there is enough room to fit more than one hand between it and the horse. Continue to walk, with your heels down, chin up and a straight back. Your heels and shoulders should be in a straight line. When you want to turn the horse, a slight pulling of the reins will turn its head. To stop the horse pull back on the reins whilst sitting deep in the saddle, or lean back whilst relaxing the reins and praising your horse. To prevent the horse from pulling when you stop, reward him by releasing the reins. Make sure the reins are not so short that they could be jerked out of your grasp. Practise these basic moves until you and the horse are comfortable with it all.
When you are both ready, try trotting – the second gait. Pressure on the horse from your legs will make him go faster. Learning how to rise and sit with the trotting horse is essential if you are to master this gait. You will need to rise and sit with the movement of the horse without bumping. This takes a bit of getting used to, and you will be using muscles which you may not be used to using! Remembering the sequence of ‘lift’, ‘sit’, ‘lift’, ‘sit’ in time to the horse’s trotting can be very helpful. Try not to sit too heavily as you may unsteady the horse. When you wish to slow down, sit deep in the saddle and pull back slightly on the reins. You will need to practise this for a while before you feel relaxed with the movements. You can attempt turning and stopping from the trot once you feel relaxed about this.
The third gait – cantering – is the next step. You may need weeks of trotting before you can cope with cantering. To ask for canter, squeeze your outside leg while having it back a bit and then squeeze with your inside leg. Whilst sit trotting is a good time to ask because you will be in the right position to start the canter. Once you are in this sitting slightly back position you should feel ready to go. Whilst in a canter, you should be rocking forward backward, with your bottom slightly off the saddle. You will need to practise this for a long time before you are adept. Make sure as you practise that you are back on your heels and rocked forward but with your body straight.
Next is the fastest gait, the gallop – only to be attempted once you are master of the canter. Again squeeze your calves as you have before, but you must be in a canter. You should be sitting slightly forward in the saddle, just as you do when cantering, with your bottom off the saddle. You are advised not to attempt a faster gait until you have had a lot of practice with the slower one.
The correct way to dismount is by swinging your right leg over the back of the horse. You won’t slip provided you keep well balanced and grip the saddle firmly. Your legs should be slightly bent at the knee so that as you lower yourself down from the left side with both legs at the same level your weight is absorbed.
Other helpful horse hints.
You should make yourself familiar with your horse. A startled horse might kick you, so always approach him from the front or side whilst touching him and talking to him. You can signal your approach by moving towards his shoulder.
If you have had no previous experience of horses, you should not attempt anything without first having been through a proper riding course. If you are a beginner, make sure you never ride alone; riding on your own is never a good idea.
It’s best to get straight back on the horse even though a fall may have shocked and hurt you.
Never kneel or sit by a horse; if you are tending to them, always make sure that you are positioned so that you can jump aside quickly if need be.
If you are uncomfortable on the horse, the horse will be aware of this and will, in turn, feel ill at ease.
Pain and discomfort to the horse will be the consequence of any yanking of the bit. The horse will be happier and easier to ride if you are gentle with it.
