When do you introduce side reins to a horse?
Just something that I’ve always wanted to know what others do. How old should a horse be before introducing side reins?

As for the side reins, I think it’s less about age and more about the stage of training and how you are using the side reins. I have seen people lunge babies 1 1/2 to 2 years old and I don’t have a problem with that, as long as you are only lunging for a couple minutes each direction on an occasional basis. It’s not putting any strain on their bodies, but it does start to establish that bond between trainer and horse that will make the horse much easier to break when the time comes. The young horses enjoy the attention and learn to get in the habit of working. If you wanted to go ahead an put very loose side reins on a youngster just so he gets used to something occasionally touching his mouth, I think that’s fine for some youngsters. Only if the horse is pretty calm and accepting of the whole lunging thing to begin with of course.
As far as putting side reins on the horse and tightening them up to the point where the horse is forced into a frame (on the bit) I wouldn’t do that until the horse is fully mature physically. This will depend on the individual horse obviouly. Warmbloods and draft crosses may not be fully mature until 5 years old or later, while lighter breeds may be ready at 3 years. Again though, all things in moderation. Lunging a horse for 10-15 minutes in moderately-adjusted side reins several times a week is WAAAAY different than forcing him to go around in circles with his head cranked into his chest for 40 minutes every single day.
