The Uses of Horse Rugs

Flies are an incessant annoyance for a horse peacefully grazing. Fly rugs are designed to prevent them from swarming a horse. Covering horses in pasture, fly rugs are made of lightweight fine mesh. They offer horses protection from flies while they graze in the pasture. The entire area of the horse’s torso is covered, including the belly which is especially sensitive. Horse Supplements In addition to protecting horses from pests, fly rugs can protect their sensitive skin from sunburn, can keep excessive dust and debris off, and can prevent the bleaching of their coat in the sun.
To keep the horse clean and dry while outside, turnout rugs are used. Warmth is another reason to use turnout rugs, especially in the winter. Made of synthetic waterproof material, turnout rugs come in varying thicknesses. Winter turnout rugs can have up to 300g of lining while summer rugs are light and airy. These rugs, too, should cover the animal’s entire belly but not fit too tightly. The horse’s chest, shoulders and withers are less prone to chafe with turnout rugs.
Stable rugs offer something similar. While they possess many of the same qualities as turnout rugs, they are designed solely for indoor use. Made from padded or quilted material of different thicknesses, these rugs are not waterproof. Very breathable, stable rugs allow perspiration to evaporate.
Equestrian rugs come in many different varieties to suit the different weather conditions a horse faces.
