Do Most Luxury Cars Really Require Hi-Octane Gas?
So you’ve purchased your dream luxury car, whether that be an gorgeous Infiniti G37, Jaguar XJ or Cadillac CTS, and now you’re wondering if you REALLY need to fill up your dream ride with premium gas. For most luxury cars, the answer is yes. The type of gas that your vehicle requires depends on the compression rate of its engine. Usually vehicles with more hp (and a higher level of performance) require higher octane fuel. Faster and more powerful cars require high-octane while more sedate, slower, family type vehicles don’t. What it boils down to is if you want speed, you’re going to have to pay for it.
Premium gas generally has an octane rating of 91 or 92 while standard has one of 87 and mid-grade comes in at around 89. The main concern with using standard gas in a car that requires premium is that it could potentially damage your vehicle’s engine. Make a note of whether the manufacturer specifically “recommends” or if it absolutely “requires” high octane fuel as these are significant differences. If it’s merely recommended, then using regular gas will not hurt your engine; it will only lessen performance.
If your car’s manufacturer doesn’t recommend or suggest premium fuel then by all means, do not utilize any. Some luxury cars such as the Cadillac STS and Lincoln MKZ use regular unleaded fuel. Some drivers may be under the impression that using more expensive gas will be beneficial for their car but the fact of the matter is that it isn’t. If your car does require the expensive type of gas and if you fail to follow the recommended guidelines, you might hear noises which are called “pinging” or “knocking”. This noise is the result of the fuel and air combusting on an uneven basis and this could even lead to engine damage. Upgrading to a higher grade of fuel will usually get rid of the noise and if it doesn’t, well that means that there is something wrong with your car and you may need a tune up or go pay your mechanic a visit. Therefore it’s crucial to follow the manufactures recommendations for your auto.
You’ve spent a lot of money on your vehicle and thus it makes sense to maintain her properly. It is an unavoidable fact that luxury cars usually cost more money to maintain and service versus regular car. So whether you drive an Infiniti, Cadillac or Jaguar, remember to follow the suggestions recommended by the manufacturer and give your ride the correct nourishment to run for a long time.
