Dressage in a jumping saddle?
I know it’s not ideal, but is it ok to do dressage in a jumping saddle? Will it screw up my position or horse?
It depends some on the type of jumping saddle. Many people ride lower level dressage in their jumping saddles and do just fine. Some jumping saddles have very narrow little seats (since they expect you to be in 2-pt all the time anyway) so it can be difficult to get that deep secure feel in your seat that you need for dressage. And some jumping saddles have the stirrup bars set too far forward, which makes it hard for your legs to come back underneath you when you lengthen your stirrups and go for that long dressage leg position. But other jumping saddles work just fine for dressage.
Though I usually ride dressage in my dressage saddle, I certainly can do so in my jumping saddle too. I have a Prestige showjumping saddle, which has a slightly wider/deeper seat than many hunter-type saddles. The only weird part with riding in dressage-length stirrups in a jumping saddle is that your leg will lie on the back part of the flap (rather than the middle) and your knee will be well behind the knee roll. So you lose the support of the knee rolls or thigh blocks, but really you should not be relying on them anyway. If I were you, I would practice dressage in the jumping saddle you already have until you decide whether you want to stick with it. If you decide to get seriously into dressage, then you can start looking for a dressage saddle. As long as the saddle fits, your horse won’t care either way.
