What is the difference between playing an ordinary violin and a pro or maestro violin?
If you are not a pro or a Maestro, there may be little or no difference at all. There is a subtle difference in feel, touch, volume, sweetness of tone, and of course the knowledge that you are closer to perfection than many other human beings get to experience. Sometimes the instrument itself was created by accident. Thirty or forty other instruments were created from the same technique and some confluence of wood and varnish and glue came together to make that one special somehow. There is a movie called “The Red Violin” that illustrates this elegantly. The movie suggests that this one violin was better than any other violin made because the blood of the Luthier’s departed wife was added into the varnish which coated the instrument. (Hope I didn’t give the plot away fro you, believe me, it’s still worth it to watch the movie) Sometimes the artist is what really makes the instrument special. I was honored to handle a Stradivarius loaned to one of my professor’s. It was meaningful to me, but the professor was the missing ingredient there. I couldn’t make the instrument sound any better than the instrument they were loaning me to take my pedagogy classes. Age is a factor of course. The wood has had a chance to rid itself of excess moisture and the nooks and crannies have all settled in and gotten comfortable together. The biggest difference between a regular and a Master’s instrument, is your ability to appreciate it. If you can hear the difference and bring that difference out, you are soul mates and are meant to spend time together. It is an obligation that you have to each other, to bring a little bit of beauty into the world, and to set a marker for the next person to acknowledge and explore past!
