Medium Horse
If a petite, medium built rider is 5 ft tall, what height should her horse be?
Any size you like.
Everyone on yahoo says 15 to 16 hands for everyone asking this question. It a purely subjective answer with no basis in the horses ability.
Actually a petite rider like you, can ride anything from a pony to an 18 hand horse, since the general limitation is your weight should be no more than 15% of the horses weight. An 18 hand horse would look funny, but a 13 hand pony would carry you just fine, since your lower limit for a long ride would be about a 600# horse.
So you range is probably more like anything from 12 hands to 17 hands, or 99% of all horses / ponies. I have seen very small ponies carry quite a bit for short distances. They tend to be very proud of themselves when they get the chance to ride.
FYI – here is girl that is just a bit smaller than you on a mini, but trust me that mini is having no problem giving her a short ride around a pen. I would not take the mini our for a trail ride though.
The main consideration would be your discipline. For trail riding, the 13 – 14 hand pony would be great for climbing steep hills etc. For jumping, you might like a taller horse, but there are Olympic level sport ponies out there. Western reiners tend to use shorter / stouter quarter horses for the quickness.
