Mini Shetland
American Mini’s vs. Shetlands?
I am a little bit confused about these two breeds. I’m only 13 and absolutely in love with mini’s. I’ve been to several shows so I am familiar with them, though I’ve never acutally been lucky enough to show one. I’ve owned and shown welsh ponies for about 7 years. I’m familiar with breeding and showing terms concerning conformation, ect.
I’m just curious:
Are Shetland ponies (classic, modern, ect.) basically larger versions of Miniature Horses? They look about the same to me.
Is it allowed for Mini’s and Shetland’s to breed and still get a shetland/mini and be able to register it as one?

The proper Shetland is an ancient, stocky little pony from the Shetland Isles. They’re no more than 42in at maturity, extremely hardy, and in terms of a weight to strength ratio, they are stronger than any other horse breed. An up to height Sheltie can easily carry an average size adult; I ride my children’s 10.2h gelding and we have no trouble together. They are wonderful little ponies! “American Shetland” ponies, on the other hand, are nothing like the Shetland pony. They’ve been crossed with goodness knows what to create a little pony – they have none of the strength or substance a Shetland should have, and honestly they’d be laughed out of the ring at any show outside of America. I don’t know if they have any real Shetland in them or if someone just got a wee pony and said, “hey, Shetlands are wee, this is a Shetland!” and so the “American Shetland” was born. They’re more like miniature horses than Shetlands.
