I have a couple of bit questions! Help!?
Ok, question 1.
What would you a waterford bit for? Some people say they are really harsh, but I don’t see how that can be. They conform to the horse’s mouth.
2. I might be buying a 2 yr old and I was wondering what bit to start her in? I was thinking a happymouth mullen mouth bit. Which cheek style? Any other suggestions? And dont’ say anything super expensive. I don’t want to spend a fortune on a bit I’m only going to be using to train my horse.
In case anyone is going to answer what cole did, I am NOT going to use a hackamore. I am going to do eventing and she needs to be able to accept a bit for at least the dressage portion. Thanks for clearing it up on waterfords. So you know, I was just curious about them, since I saw them in this horse book.
Because of the vairous bumps on the mouthpiece of the waterford bit the pounds per presure from the rider’s hands on a smaller surface and cause pressure points on the bars of the mouth, which can be a greater amount of pounds of pressure per square inch than in a bit with a solid mouthpiece. Don’t be fooled by the common misconception that just because the bit is many jointed and will not have the “nutcracker” effect of a single jointed bit, that it is more gentle. While the bit does lay more loosly in the horse’s mouth if the rider has unsteady hands or uses a “sawing” motion this bit will be a torture device! This bit also becomes very rigid when pressure is applied giving it a LOT of stopping power. So, as with all bits, the rider’s hands play a HUGE role in weather or not a bit is harsh. In this case it is 6 of one, half dozen of another. I would say that in general this bit is of “moderate” severity when used properly with a soft handed rider.
Personally I love the JP by Korsteel loose ring, french link snaffle with the curved bars. Super gentle and still gets the job done (again when used correctly!) This is also not an expensive bit maybe $40.
As for the TB, each animal is different. They each have individual likes and dislikes. Thier mouths are formed slightly differently. Some have high pallets, some low. Some have narrow bar space some don’t. You will have to find what works for him best. But, I recommend starting in a basic snaffle with a D ring and moving on from there if you need to. Good luck!
