Confederacy’s War Bonds Are Beautiful Decorative Items
Anyone who knows anything about history is aware that Confederate turned to dust financially speaking long before the conclusion of the Civil War, so much so that southerners were reduced to burning it for warmth or covering wall cracks with it. Today, though, Confederate money is highly collectible. Confederate bonds are even collectible–and valuable.
Confederate war bonds raised money for vitally required victuals and clothing and other necessities for the South’s soldiers during the war. They were a means for the the Rebel leadership to raise money by borrowing from its citizens. A person would provide money to the Confederate government and in return receive a bond, which was a bearing a written promise to repay the bond purchaser–along with interest–beginning on a certain date in the future.
It goes without saying that the majority of buyers of Confederate bonds were not repaid, and the bonds that were not destroyed or lost were stashed away in attics and other hidden places.
Today, though, those bond certificates are sought-after collector’s items. And, you can turn around and sell Confederate bonds (and other paper collectibles) on eBay for good money.
CSA bonds are just the thing for contributing both an historic and a decorative aura to a room. For this purpose, almost any of the bonds you might be able to find find on the market will serve. However, if you are collecting to sell on down the line for profit, you need to study up on the various bond issues, and also such indispensable things as evaluating condition.
The Confederacy issued a large number and variety of bonds during its short existence. They were printed with different face values, and differed a great deal in appearance and even in the color of the paper on which they were printed.
From an era during which even a run-of-the-mill bank certificate was often an exercise in extreme ornamentation, the Confederacy’s bonds abounded in flourishes, including such staples as fields and cities, mythic figures, and, of course, generals and other southern heroes.
A typical example would be the $1,000 face-value Confederate bond that I bought and put in a frame a number of years ago. It is beautiful, bearing words printed in ornamental italic script and, most prominently, a vignette of the revered Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. You probably know that Gen. Jackson was sent to his reward in the midst of the war after being mistakenly shot by his own troops near Chancellorsville. Being one of the South’s greatest heroes, therefore it was predictable that his image would come to be looking out from a Confederate bond.
Southerners were not the only purchasers of the Confederacy’s war bonds. Some persons in England, as well as other countries of Europe, did too. Perhaps they were people whose sympathy in the Civil War lay with the Confederacy and its cause. Or quite possibly they were merely putting a bet down on on the outcome of the war.
If your interest in Confederate bond certificates perhaps goes beyond simply holding on to and admiring their peculiar beauty and historical aura, you will discover them to be a wonderful entre into scripophily. This is the hobby of collecting old financial certificates, which can include bank instruments, stock certificates, railroad bonds and son on.
If you are a history enthusiast–or if you’re just on the lookout for a different sort of “art” with which to cover your walls–learning about Confederate bonds and acquiring a handful select examples could turn into a captivating yet reasonably affordable pastime.
