Cost Effective Green Grassroots Innovation to Control Tachinid Flies
One of the major problems for sericulture farmers is the destruction caused by Tachinid flies to mulberry silkworms. Tachinid flies (Exorista bombycis), also known as Uzi flies, are a major pest for silkworm production and generally, farmers lose up to 15 to 20 percent of their annual production because of this pest. These flies inject their eggs in the silkworm’s larvae causing diseases to them which often lead to their death.
Md. Wakeel Ahmed a silk worm farmer from Karnataka, India has developed a green cost effective device for controlling Uzi flies. With the help of this Uzi fly trap, even 100% control of the fly is also possible.
This is a simple device and can be made using household materials. It consists of a nylon mosquito mesh, a hollow pipe, a plastic bottle, and PVC collars. One end of the hollow pipe is tied inside the nylon mesh and the other is pierced into the plastic bottle through the cork fitted on its opening.
The idea is to use the scent of silkworm larva for attracting Uzi flies. First, the windows of the silkworm rearing room are covered using nylon mosquito nets and then one or two holes are left in them from which the flies can enter the room. Now, the trap is hung with the hole such that the nylon mesh of the trap covers the hole left on the window. Flies entering the window find themselves in the mesh of the trap and following the scent, they enter into the bottle through the hollow pipe. As soon as they come out from the other end of the pipe, they get trapped inside the viscous liquid of the bottle.
Recognition and support for the Tachinid flies trap
Wakeel Ahmed‘s grassroots innovation was appreciated by the Department of Sericulture, Government of Karnataka and he was twice named as the best silkworm farmer by the department.
National Innovation Foundation, India (NIF) has also recognized this green grassroots innovation and has helped in building and improving the prototypes of the trap. The non-profit autonomous organization under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India is also supporting in doing market surveys to commercialize the product. The Tachinid flies trap has become quite popular among the silkworm farmers of the locality.
