Oxbow Stirrups
Western stirrup question?
the stirrups i use are rawhide oxbows. (rounded stirrups). Are they like this for any reason? does it make it easier or harder to ride? any info would be appreciated thx 
I have always thought of Oxbows as cutting horse stirrups. The reason that they hurt you is probably that you are trying to ride them on the ball of your foot, as most of us are taught is “proper.” The oxbow is not made to sit at the flat ball of your boot, it is meant to be seated “home” against your heel. In that position, your boot fits the small arc. Seating your foot home makes your foot less likely to slide out of the stirrup, such is needed to ride the quick turns, stops and starts of a cutting horse. I don’t’ believe that they were made to be easy to get out of, but the opposite, that they are easy NOT to loose.
I don’t ride in oxbows either. Back when I did ride with cutting horse trainers, they had them on all their saddles, and I hated them. I like the flat bottom stirrups also, whether or not they are thin or thick.
