Why do doctors deny women of making an informed choice by not telling the risks of infant formula?
Wouldn’t more women choose to breastfeed if the doctors told women the risks. Higher risk of SIDS, higher risk of allergies, higher risk of ezcema, increased risk of obesity, increase risk of diabetes, to name SOME.
Why would medical professionals deny women of an informed choice?
If the reason is to not make them feel guilty, that is still not fair.
Do they not tell overweight women the risks of her lifestyle? Or do they spare her feelings? No, they tell her.
Why such indulgance for formula?
I don’t want to start a breast or bottle feeding war but my guess as to why doctor’s may not be negative towards formula is for 3 reasons.
1.) Not every woman will be able to breast feed so they do not want women to feel badly if they are unable to breast feed.
2.) If a woman decides to adopt a child and can’t breast feed them, woman would be paranoid that their baby could die, have allergies, have diabetes etc.
3.) There is not enough scientific evidence to support the claims you listed.
I don’t think there will be a debate over #1 or #2 but #3 usually raises an eyebrow, After hours (at least 30+) of time spent at Harvard Medical Library, the scientific evidence does not exclusively support the claims listed above. Many doctors are worried about malpractice so they tend to be very cautious what they say. Just one example of this is with children and obesity. Childhood obesity has risen 18% over the past 10 years. In that same 10 year period women that breast fed went from 60%-77% a 17% increase. If breast feeding reduces obesity, then why has childhood obesity risen at the same rate that more women breast feed?
That is what is being researched now and because of the ongoing research I think doctors stay mum.
