Is this a rare chariot by Santini, and how much might it be worth?
A rare chariot by Santini?
I bought a sculpture last year on ebay of a roman or gladiator on a chariot. I was thinking of selling it but can’t find one like it. The usual roman is carrying the reigns in both hands, but mine has one hand on the reigns and the other hand raised above his head and shaped like an “o” as he must have held something- a sword maybe, or a whip? His body is leaning forward and he is looking to the right at a downward tilt. He has something of a mask or foce on his breastplate. The chariot is built with the front tip carved as a rams’ head. Two horses pull it, one is rearing slightly higher than the other. The measurements are 11 3/5″ long, 4 1/2″wide, and about 8 1/2″ tall.
Your description is good but it would really take a couple of different angled pics to really tell. Maybe your best bet would be to take it to an auction house for professional appraisal…;
