Will wearing a black coat in hunter/jumper shows count against a rider?
I have a question about wearing a black show coat at hunter shows. I bought a black coat for my daughter because I thought it would look nice with black boots and black helmet. I later found out that black is traditionally for dressage shows but I see lots of black hunter coats for sale. My question is whether a judge will see her wearing black and count it against her or not.
really depends on what circuit you’re showing – I see a lot of black at 4-H shows, but never at “real” hunter/jumper shows.
Technically, the judge cannot penalize for slightly unusual tack or clothing, as long as it is allowed by the rule book. The USEF rule book states that hunter competitors must wear either “scarlet or dark” coats, and black surely qualifies as dark. Its just not in fashion right now. Ideally, you do not want to stick out from the crowd, so generally its best to wear what everyone else is.
Ultimately, hunters are judged solely on the horse, not on the rider, so yes, she can wear black. She should not be penalized for it, but if it comes down to two identical rides, with one rider dressed fashionably, and one dressed non-traditionally, the win will likely go to the better dressed rider.
