Are These Three Horse Movies Amongst Your Favourites?
A horse doesn’t need to play a part to be significant; its absence is enough in one film! ‘ A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!’ is Richard III’s cry when he desperately needs a horse to escape from those who would kill him on Bosworth Field.The very positive horses portrayed in these films are completely different from Shakespeare’s evil Richard and the horse he cried out for. While life in Richard III’s time may have been bloodier and generally a great deal more perilous, at least they didn’t have to worry about the necessities of veterinary bills or horse insurance!
The Black Stallion
This award winning film was produced in 1979 – some 400 years after Shakespeare.The unfolding relationship between Alec and a vigorous Arabian stallion forms the basis of this movie. Especially memorable is the shipwreck scene and Alec’s subsequent rescue from drowning by the horse and the ensuing time on a desert island where they learn to overcome the mistrust they previously felt for each other. This trust becomes total and the two become inseparable. The deep attachment that’s possible between a human and a horse is beautifully portrayed. If you haven’t yet seen the film, I won’t spoil it for you. Suffice it to say that it was described as possibly ‘ the greatest children’s movie ever made.’ That doesn’t mean you have to be a child to enjoy it.
Black Beauty
What! Another black horse!. I suppose ‘Piebald Beauty’ doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. Whatever, in this 1994 production it is Black Beauty herself who narrates so we don’t see her from the outside as we did with the Black Stallion. The obviously human nature and attitude of this voice is a serious defect. This isn’t a complaint about the nature of the voice; if it sounded like a horse, any cinema would soon lose its audience. No, it’s what the horse says and how it’s said that grates. And, unfortunately, it voices the opinions of a rather naive and sanctimonious human. Making a horse think and speak as though it were a human is not at all convincing. Although there’s a lot of cringing sentimentality, there’s also some magnificent photography especially of Black Beauty strutting her stuff.
The Horse Whisperer
This film was issued 4 years later, in 1998. Grace and her precious horse, Pilgrim, recover from a terrible accident in this film. Annie, Grace’s mother, wants to find a way to bring about the recovery of Grace and Pilgrim so she takes them to Montana where Tom, known for his understanding of animals, lives in open country. It is not only with horses that Tom can form close bonds; it’s with troubled women as well. It doesn’t take long for both Annie and Pilgrim to become devoted to him. The contrast between Annie’s previous sophisticated city life and that of the country is a theme that is developed alongside the story of Grace and Pilgrim’s recovery and the growing love between Annie and Tom. Annie is faced with choosing either the down-to earth Tom or her high-flying lawyer husband. Who will she choose?!
These horse movies will provide you with plenty of moving horses – trotting, cantering and galloping, as well as moving moments. Though you may consider some of the ‘moving’ moments mawkish and laughable, you will find many of the purely visual scenes to be extremely delightful. These movies are not, however, only about horses; each also conveys a message. Whether the horse carries – or is saddled with – this message, and what the message is can be decided only by you.
