An Introduction to Horse Supplements
Whether it is for vitamins, minerals, fats or protein, horse supplements are very common. Requiring only water, a salt or mineral lick and quality forage, a healthy horse usually does not need supplements. Horses of an advanced age, that are infirm or subjected to athletics, work or breeding may need a supplement to their diet. Otherwise supplements should not be used as a substitute for proper nutrition.
There are a plethora of commercially available horse supplements. double bridle Among the options are digestive aids, colic prevention, electrolyte additives, hoof and energy supplements, growth development aids, blood building, vitamin and mineral supplements. Fat and protein are also commonly added to a horse’s diet. The most common type of protein added is soybean meal, although cottonseed, peanut and linseed meals are also given to horses. Fat sources come mostly from vegetable oils like corn oil, which is the most common. Rice bran, too, is a popular fat source, with 20% fat content in addition to added fiber. Flaxseed, too, provided it’s ground, is another beneficial fat supplement.
It is important to remember that the average horse will not need supplements. All their body needs is quality forage, water and a mineral lick. Depending on the horse’s size the supplemental intake will vary – just like their feed.
Horse owners must have a thorough understanding of equine nutrition. With particular eating habits and body chemistry, horses have individual needs as well. Part of their nutrition may or may not involve supplements. Vitamins, minerals, fats and protein can all be fed to horses in the form of supplements, but they are not a substitute for a natural healthy diet. With access to water, quality forage like grass or hay, and minerals, healthy horses need little else for nutrition. Work, athletic or stud horses, however, may need supplements to fuel depleted bodies.
