Pain while running in ABU Sage Green Boots?
I am an AFROTC cadet and we do a lot of running in our standard issue sage green combat boots. I am fine when running in tennis shoes, but running in the combat boots really messes with my knees and shins and I am always in a lot of pain at the end of the run. Do you have any advice for inserts for the boots, or authorized combat boots that are easier on the knees/shins? I am trying to avoid shin splints and stress fractures as much as possible. Thanks!
First off, you need to break in the boots…..A good way is to have two pair of boots, cut a small notch on side of the sole of one pair so you can tell them apart from the other pair. Then alternate wearing the two pairs of boots each alternating day….(Notched boots on even numbered days, un-notched boots on odd numbered days.)
Second, you need a different runny style. Boots, even if broken in, limit your ankle motion so you can not take the long strides that you can take with tennis shoes. (By the way, tennis shoes are for tennis, use track shoes for running.) You might try the following, shorten your stride. You will not run as fast but you will not be fighting the boots as you will not be trying to bend your ankle as much. Second, lift your knees a bit higher. (Go watch the old movie Chariots of Fire about an Olympic runner being trained by coach… he had him doing a running exercise that made him look like he was prancing.)
Third, see if you can get wider boots and stick in a thicker insole. You might have to glue down the insole so it does not move around. Also you can wear combat boot socks that have a padded sole on them plus they go up higher than the boot to protect from chaffing from the boot top.
Lastly, you can really lighten and modify the boot. Take it to a good shoe maker and have him grind out the leather inside. If he grinds enough the top will be very thin, almost like cloth. That will give your ankle full movement and you should be able to run the way you are accustomed to. Keep in mind it will cost you some money and the boot will no longer provide you any ankle support or protection. Plus that will only help with that pair of boots…..not any other boots…..that is why I suggest this last…..
