Barrel Warmers
Barrels and drums are extremely useful for those in construction and transportation services that need to transport or store large amounts of materials. In colder climates, people often run into problems with temperature sensitive materials such as tar, paint, or varnish. If these products become too cold, their chemical integrity can be compromised and the product becomes worthless.
Throughout time many devices have been created to keep these temperature sensitive materials at a desired heat and viscosity. Drum heating ovens were used to keep higher numbers of barrels warm and are kept at optimal temperature by steam or electric elements.
Band heaters are used to warm individual barrels. Drawbacks to band heaters are that they don’t have additional insulation and so lose a lot of heat to the environment, making it less efficient. The lack of insulation also presents a safety hazard as it may burn the handler. Also depending on whether you have a steel, or plastic barrel will determine what type of band heater you need, they are not cross functional.
The most recent development is Powerblanket barrel warmer blankets. These drum heating blankets are insulated and use less energy, typically drawing between 2 to 4 amps depending on the barrel size. They plug into standard 120 V outlets and can have up to five plugged into one outlet. They are lightweight and durable, costing only pennies a day to operate. These barrel warmers are capable of reaching evenly distributed temperatures of over 200 degrees, and can be plugged in 24 hours a day, every day, all year. The temperature is controlled by a simple thermostat that maintains the temperature as set by user. For heating on the go, 12 V power cords can be custom made to keep barrels warm during transportation by using the cigarette lighter for power.
