Listing the Different Types of Essential Horse Blankets and Sheets
Have you ever noticed the sheer amount of different supplies there are for owning a horse? There are saddles, bridles, brushes, and combs. I don’t even want to start on the various feeds. It can get rather confusing. The one item I hear the most questions about is horse blankets. Browsing through a tack store you will see there is a huge selection of blankets and each serves a unique function or purpose.
Here are some of the more common horse blankets you’ll run across and how each one is used:
The first are turn-out rugs and they pretty much what their name implies. These blankets, made from durable materials, designed to withstand the roughest riding and brush. A positive aspect of these blankets is that they will rip if the horse gets it caught on something. This way the horse doesn’t get cut or injured. There are two basic styles of turn-out rugs. One is a heavier material intended for use during the cold winter months. Blankets made from lighter materials are designed for the horse to wear during cool spring and summer nights.
My personal favorite blanket is the horse fly sheets. These blankets designed to keep flies and other biting insects from biting and aggravating your horses. They come in different styles and fits. My advice is to properly measure your horse before buying one of these sheets.
Another popular blanket is quarter sheets. They hook on the saddle and cover the horse’s haunches. Their purpose to keep the horse’s muscles warm and loose before it will race or perform or there are worn on the horse after an intense round of exercise. They are extremely necessary but a good piece of equipment to have if your horse races or competes in shows.
Stable sheets are blankets used after the horse has been groomed and bathed. They are very light weight and shouldn’t be worn outside since they can rip and get dirty very easily. You would really only use a stable sheet as a means to keep the horse clean of dirt and dust within the stable or if the horse is being transported.
Coolers are another type of blanket for obvious purposes. Riders and horse owners use these blankets to slow the cooling process. They usually cover the entire body of the horse. They are cut in a specific way that air is allowed to flow through the blanket and allow the horse’s skin to breathe while cooling the horse after physical exercise.
