What is the difference between a long shank on a curb bit and a short one?
I’ve seen people advertising their western curb bits saying different lengths of shanks, like 4″, 5″, 6″, etc. What is the difference? Is one stronger on the horse’s mouth than the other? Does it have something to do with the leverage?
Yes.
An O ring, D ring, Eggbutt, etc, are pound for pound, meaning if you pull in the reins with 1 pound, the horse feels 1 pound.

Would at least double the pound you pull, so the horse would feel 2 or more pounds, while you’re only pulling with 1.
The longer the shank, the more the pounds on the horse’s feel increase.
(I THINK it’s 1 more pound per inch of the shank but I’m not positive)
So, a bit like this

would require you to have very light hands, or the horse would probably rear up with all that unneeded pressure.
