Is show jumping not a popular equestrian sport in America?
I know there is lots of really good show jumpers in America but I just asked a question about what disciplines people do and nobody said show jumping?
Yes, I understand that… but is there no such thing as pony show jumping, like what bezzie madden, laura kraut and ashley bond do with horses. The competitions that they hold in Spruce Medows etc.
As said, showjumping falls into the larger ‘hunter/jumper’ category, which also includes hunters and equitation competitions. Hunter/jumper is VERY popular in the states – especially on the Coasts – Florida and California are huuuge national(and international) competition zones..
I do showjumping, but if you ask me what riding discipline I do, I’d probably say ‘hunter/jumper’.
Hunters is a huge division of competition – the fences never go over 4’6(and seldom reach above 4′) – and the courses are designed differently, and the horses go around quite differently than, say, an average upper level showjumper haha.
Equitation is more popular with the junior riders(under 18) – and is referred to as ‘Big Eq.’ – but adults will compete in equitation classes as well – ‘Big Eq.’ is more or less a very, very competitive show circuit among younger riders.
It’s more common for American riders to start out doing the Hunters and Equitation divisions – and THEN transfer to the upper level jumpers. And it’s generally a good practice, the riders are jumping lower fences(by lower, I mean lower than MOST grand prixs), learning to ride effectively and well – and then they transition to the jumpers.
That is what the typical hunter/jumper rider will do – but MANY riders and trainers focus on the hunter/equitation aspect of it.
