curb chain vs curb strap with a snaffle bit??? western pleasure ppls?
okay so i got a 4 year old mare that im showing western pleasure this summer. i use a snaffle bit on her and i heard that u need to use a leather curb strap, but right now i have a curb chain. whats the difference? why does the strap need to be leather in a show ring? what does a leather one do or don’t do that a chain does? thanks!
A snaffle bit has no shanks, therefore it can slip through the mouth if the rider pulls hard enough and/or the horse gapes his mouth wide enough.
This can happen with any snaffle bit: full cheek, dee ring, egg butt or O ring.
You never use a chain curb strap on a snaffle bit. You always use a leather strap.
Chain strap is for leverage bits (anything with a shank)…..when you pick up the reins, the chain applies some pressure to the jaw/chin area.
The strap needs to be leather in the show ring….and anywhere else…because that is the proper strap to use.
Leather strap on a snaffle is purely to keep the bit from slipping through the mouth. That’s it. No matter how the reins are used, you will not put pressure on the jaw/chin area with a leather strap on a snaffle bit.
Using a chain strap on a snaffle shows lack of understanding of the snaffle bit tool. I highly suggest that you change your strap to leather and keep it like that.
