Different Varieties of Horse Bridles
A bridle is an integral piece of horse tack that fits over the head in order to direct it. The headstall, bit and reins are the three basic components of a bridle. english saddles Allowing the rider to steer the horse, the reins are attached to the bit which sits in the horse’s mouth. Other bridles like the hackamore use a noseband instead of a bit to control the horse. Depending on the style of horseback riding, different bridles will be used, some more complicated than others.
Made of several straps and buckles, the headstall features the crownpiece, cheekpiece, throatlatch, and sometimes the browband and noseband. The double bridle – a more complicated harness – uses two sets of reins along with two bits. The two bits are known as either the curb and the small snaffle or the bit and bradoon. Horse Rugs The headstall of a double bridle is likewise more complicated, requiring a second, smaller set of headgear known as the bradoon hanger. Blinders, a cavesson, bit hobble and curb strap, among others are several of the other components that may be found on a bridle.
In the English riding style there are three basic types of bridle. The snaffle bridle, Pelham bridle and double bridle collectively comprise English-type bridles. The snaffle is most common, employing one bit and one set of reins. The Pelham bridle also uses just one bit – the Pelham bit, but there are two sets of reins. Lastly, the double bridle or Weymouth bridle uses two sets of reins and two bits, the snaffle and curb, but sometimes called the Weymouth and bradoon. Stirrups Highly trained horses in advanced competition use double bridles, dressage and saddle seat riding being two such events.
Bridles used in the western riding style are less complicated than those used in the English style. Most have no noseband nor do they have a browband. A halter bridle is an alternative that is more comfortable for the horse. More often than not it is for leading or tying the horse. A hackamore is yet another type, also known as a bitless bridle. Instead of a bit through the horse’s mouth, the animal is steered with a noseband, either end of which is attached to a rein.
