Horse Bridles of Different Types
A necessary piece of horse tack, horse bridles are used with domesticated horses and come in many variations. equestrian rugs Dressage competition, for instance, requires a bridle that must be deftly worked, whereas other models are designed for the horse’s comfort.
The double bridle, bitless bridle and comfort bridle are three types of equestrian bridles. Also called dressage bridles, those used in formal competition are mostly double bridles.
A horse bridle is used to direct a horse when it is mounted. Horse Bridles Bridles consist of a headstall and reins. The piece that goes into the horse’s mouth is the bit which is a part of the headstall. Of course, with bitless bridles, that is not always the case.
The double bridle or dressage bridle uses two bits. They are also called Weymouth bridles. The snaffle and the curb are the names of the two bits in a double – or dressage bridle. They are known as the bradoon and the Weymouth in dressage circles. To control a double bridle, two sets of reins are required. Double bridles are usually found only in dressage competition, saddle seat riding and other formal events because they require a lot of skill to use.
The bitless bridle, at the other extreme, is just that: a bridle without any bit. comfort bridle A type of bitless bridle is called the hackamore, and rather than a bit, it relies upon pressure points on the horse’s face to direct the animal. It uses a nosepiece – a strap of leather that fastens over the snout – instead of a bit. The reins pull on either side to steer the animal. Requiring a different touch, bitless bridles are common in endurance and trail riding.
Designed to more pleasant for a horse, the comfort bridle is another option. Extra padding on the nosepiece, around the ears and under the chin are features of the comfort bridle. To ease the discomfort to the horse from pulling on the reins, comfort bridles are usually made from very soft leather in addition to the abovementioned features.
