Special Galloping
Someone explain Reining to me.?
Basically what the question says. It’s apparently the big thing of the Western sports- The only one to be recognized by the FEI and apparently rather close to becoming recognized by the Olympics. Looking at the videos, however, I really just see the horse doing the turns, galloping off, doing a flying change while changing direction, and then doing the sliding stops. Is that it?
I mean, the turns are cool, and no doubt take skill to do, and the sliding stops are nice as well, but most horses can gallop off and flying changes are not exactly special- Most Hunters learn to do them very early, and Dressage takes them much further with Tempis and the like. So basically- What’s so special about Reining that sets it apart? And yes, I’ve seen the Reining/Dressage rider video.
Reining shows the ability of how a horse and man can work together. It’s a style of riding demonstrating tremendous agility in turning, stopping, lead changing and more. Allot of training goes into a reining horse. Reining is a form a cowhorse sport, it showcases all the moves needed to work cattle in one pattern. To cut, sort and pen cattle- a horse needs to be able to stop quickly(sliding stop), turn around quickly(roll back),change directions(lead change) and and change speed to compensate for the cattle’s movement. It requires the horse to be responsive and in tune with its rider, whose aids should not be easily seen, and judges the horse on its ability to perform a set pattern of movements. The horse should be willingly guided or controlled with little or no apparent resistance and dictated to completely.
Reining really is the western version of Dressage. I’ve competed in both for many years and both take just as much time, heart and understanding.
