Horse Tack: Riding Stirrups
The stirrup is a necessary tool for horseback riding. They not only aid the rider in the mounting of the equine animal, but they stabilize the rider while atop and allow for greater control. The use of mounted cavalry in wartime was made possible by the stirrup, and some contend that it, like the printing press, helped usher in modern civilization.
Different materials usually comprise the modern stirrups, either leather and steel or leather and a composite. They attach to the saddle via stirrup leathers, hefty straps that themselves attach to the saddle tree. Short stirrups allow the rider greater mobility whereas long stirrups allow for greater control. Really, it is the length of the stirrup leathers that differs, not the stirrup itself. Faster horse travel requires shorter stirrups because the rider must be further on the front of the animal. Polo players and horse race jockeys in the English style both require shorter leathers. With Western saddles, on the other hand, long stirrups are used to give the rider greater control of the horse. Not only do they create a sturdier base, but they make for a more comfortable ride.
If a stirrup is improperly sized, it can be dangerous for two reasons. equestrian rugs Overly large stirrups can let the foot slip through, while undersized stirrups might trap the foot. If a rider were to fall, in both cases they might be unable to free their feet and be dragged. English saddles have what is called a stirrup bar that lets the leathers detach from the saddle if the rider falls out the mount. On western saddles, wider treads mean a foot cannot get stuck, and some have tapaderos, a protruding leather cup that prevents the foot from slipping out the front.
