Stirrup Leathers
How much does a pair of decent stirrup leathers cost?
I have found them everywhere from $12 to $200 dollars. I don’t want ones that will fall apart after the first ride, but I don’t want to be paying an arm and a horse’s leg for them either? What is a good middle of the road price? Also, what length should I get? I am 4’10″ (I know, it’s sad but true), and have a 27″ inseam.
I would spend between $60 – $100. Yes, they are really overpriced. Every major saddle brand has their own leathers. They know that they can “get” you because most people want the color and brand of the saddle to match perfectly with the leathers.
I am going to assume that you are riding english and using an all-purpose or close contact saddle. I am 5’3″, and for my close contact saddle, I bought the pony (kid’s – 48″) courbette leathers for about $70, and they are perfect for me. I would reccommend the same for you. 48″ – 50″, and no higher than 52″, for sure. For my dessage saddle I use 28″ Bates Leather Webbers. Made like the Wintec Webbers but with leather over them. They hook at the bottom, by the iron, to reduce bulk under the leg.
One of the good things about being short is that sometimes you can get things for cheaper (i.e. kids/pony products)! Dover has a number of quality leathers from $80 – $100. Google around, once you decide the brand you want.
