Overview Of The Libbey Glass Corporation
The Libby glass Company has a reputation that stretches back hundreds of years. The original firm was set up in the town of East Cambridge at the start of the nineteenth century, at this time they were known as the New England Glass Company. This name was altered to the New England Glass works when bought out by William Libbey in 1878. As competition in the manufacturing industry was rapidly growing on the east coast, it was decided to relocate the business to the sate of Ohio. Ohio contained rich sand deposits and gas reserves.
Ohio also offered better logistics in the form of an extensive network of railroads and steamship lines. It was not until 1892 that the company was given the name still in use today. Now it is a prestigious brand and one that is in high demand across the US and internationally for items such as water pitchers.
The company has developed a reputation as being great innovators. If we were to study developments in the glassware industry, we would discover that it was designers working for the firm who helped to develop new ideas and trends. An example of which is Joseph Locke who joined the firm at the end of the nineteenth century and helped to revolutionize the production line.
It was Locke who was responsible for creating a number of new types of designs. This included such styles as Maize, Amberina, Peach Blow, and Pomonma. These designs were hand crafted and often used expensive materials. For example, Amberian has a reddish-amber hue due to an infusion of gold.
Jump forward to the present day and we discover that this producer is still a pioneer in the industry. Apart from creating exquisite cut glass, the company also manufacturers windows, bottles, containers, and a dizzying assortment of drinks vessels. The mass production of glassware began a century ago and was in part thanks to an inventor known as Michael Owens. He created a machine that automatically produced an assortment of interesting glass products.
The age of automation ushered in a time of greater turnover. Personnel and manufacturing costs were brought down while production levels increased. Libbey claim to be the first manufacturer using a special heat treated process to create products that were incredibly durable and strong. In fact, they played a role in designing and manufacturing glass products for a range of industries and not just for the home.
As the uptaking of the automobile occurred at a rapid pace in the first half of the twentieth century, there was a huge demand for strong and clear windshields. The company’s designers took up the challenge of producing windshields with determination. Ohio became known as the glassware capital of the country and the world thanks to the Libbey Company.
Over the years the Libby glass company has diversified and grown. They have been involved of late in the acquisition of other companies producing home consumer items such as water pitchers. Their catalog today is broad and diverse and Libbey Glass is a company that deserves the reputation that they have built up.
