Thumb Snaffle
Is a tom thumb a snaffle?
I strongly believe it is not a snaffle. But I do have several trainers telling me it is? It is a leverage bit, which cancels it out in the snaffle family, am I correct or do I have the wrong idea?
An Australian Tom Thumb is a true snaffle bit. The American version is a curb bit. A jointed mouthpiece is not what makes a bit a snaffle, which was the confusion that led to the misnaming of the american bit.
A snaffle is any bit with the mouthpiece attached at dead center of a dee or ring. The mouthpiece can be anything from a straight bar to a ported bar to a jointed mouthpiece. There cannot be any leverage shank. Even a Kimberwicke with it’s Dees cannot function as a snaffle, and must be used with a curb strap, since the mouthpiece of the bit is not dead-centered with the Dee cheek bars, making them into shank and purchase, and creating leverage.
the American Tom Thumb is a shanked jointed mouth curb bit. The Australian Tom Thumb is comparable to a full cheek snaffle bit.
