How to train a horse to walk forward when sitting in the saddle?
I have a new 3 year old mare that I have been training for a while. She is an excellent horse, but I am not able to make her walk when i’m sitting in the saddle. She will respond to pressure on the ground, but it seems when I get in the saddle she forgets everything. She is still very calm, but she won’t move anywhere unless she is following another horse. What is a good way to train her to move forward with no one leading her?
Hi, If you follow this advice this training method will work for the walk, trot and cantor/lope…
Step 1: Make sure you can flex your horse’s head around on both sides easily while in the saddle.
Step 2: Have a set of reins long enough so you have enough left over to use as a spanker. (I recommend mecate style reins)
Timing is important!
Lets get started…Squeeze lightly with both legs, (hold the squeeze) if the horse does not move forward on the squeeze (give about 1 second) CLICK once if the horse does not move on the click instantly give a light spank with the end of your reins on the shoulders, keep spanking until the horse moves 1 step forward then release all pressure,(if she stops when you release the pressure just start from the beginning), let the horse walk about 4-5 steps then flex her head around and make her stop (don’t release her head until she comes to a complete stop). Let her rest for about 5 seconds and start the process again (each time let her walk a little farther). If the light spank does not get her moving forward then increase the pressure of the spank, keep building pressure until she moves forward and then instantly release the pressure. Remember to hold your leg pressure until she moves forward!
When you Flex her head around to make her stop alternate sides.
Stay consistent and your horse will figure out that when you squeeze it means go and go NOW!
Work on this everyday.
When she is good at the walk, try it with the trot. Same technique but hold the squeeze until she trots and release… for the cantor hold until she lopes and release.(Side note, when teaching your horse to lope, at this time do not worry about what lead she is picking up just get her to lope).
When teaching the trot and lope start off by letting her go about 10 feet and flex her head around to stop. Then repeat.
If your horse starts going faster than you want just flex her head around and get her stopped and start over. (Flexing laterally is very important)
