Horse Rugs: All-Weather Protection
To protect horses from the cold weather, keep insects off their coat or add warmth while in the stable, horse rugs serve all purposes. Horse Rugs No matter the size of the horse, horse rugs or horse blankets come in many varieties and materials. Typically, they run the length of the horse from chest to rump and are fastened with straps underneath. There are types, though, that are completely closed in the front and must slip over the horse’s head. Tailor made blankets are also common depending on the size of the animal.
While outdoors, cold weather blankets are an added source of warmth for the horse. In the warm summer months, horses should be kept relatively free of flies. Fly sheets with optional fly masks protect the horse from bothersome pests. Some rugs are worn while the horse works such as a quarter sheet. It covers the rump section of the horse and helps to keep them warm. Another type of work rug are saddle blankets. These are put on a horses back underneath the saddle. Saddle blankets add a moderate amount of warmth while mostly serving as a barrier between the rough saddle and their skin.
A different type of rug called a cooler or a mantle covers the entire body of the horse. equestrian rugs After an intense workout, a bath or a rainstorm, a horse can be wet from water or sweat. This keeps the horse warm while it dries and reduces the chance of hypothermia.
Horse rugs protect the animal from overexposure, whether from hot or cold weather or bothersome insects. Each of the different types serves a unique purpose, keeping the animal comfortably warm, dry or cool depending on the season.
