When showing Western, where does your non-rein hand go?
I have my first show on Saturday and I’m riding Western. I have no clue what to do with my non-rein hand. I heard someone say that in equitation it goes next to your rein hand and in pleasure it just hangs at your side. Help please?
When riding in a pleasure class, most people have their non-rein hand in one of two places:
1. Relaxed on your thigh.
2. Arm hanging straight down with your hand in a closed fist.
I prefer keeping my hand relaxed on my thigh, incase I need to suddenly grab the rein in an emergency and because I find it easier to stay in a relaxed position that way. If I free my hand completely and keep it at my side, my arm tends to bounce when I ride, which throws off you posture.
In equitation, the hand is different. For equitation, close your hand in a fist with your thumb resting on the flat surface formed by your index finger. When riding, keep you fist upright (thumb towards the sky), and your hand next to the saddle horn- NOT the rein hand.
