Types of Horse Rugs
Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, horse rugs, also called horse blankets each have a certain use. Among their uses are keeping horses warm while in pasture and protecting them from flies. treeless saddles Common horse rugs include saddle blankets, stable blankets, travel rugs, fly sheets, coolers and waterproof pasture blankets.
Horses, when saddled in the western style, require some extra protection between their skin and the saddle which is precisely the purpose of saddle blankets. A quarter sheet is another type of blanket worn by a horse while it works. It is worn by the mounted horse, covering its rump section, adding warmth without impairing movement.
When moved by truck and trailer, travel blankets are often draped over horses for warmth. Horse Bridles Other rugs are used when the horse is out to pasture or in for the night. A waterproof horse blanket works wonders for horses when they are outdoors and the weather is cold and wet. As they are mostly made from synthetic materials, they keep horses warm and dry. When the horse is in for the night, stable blankets are worn for added warmth. Usually not waterproof, stable blankets are made out of wool in different thicknesses.
To protect horses from insects and the diseases they may carry, fly sheets are used in the warm months. Sheets can cover the horse from chest to rump. Optional fly masks can be added to cover the horse’s face and eyes. Sheets also prevent sunburn and hide bleaching caused by excessive exposure to the sun. These synthetic, breathable blankets keep the horse cool in the summertime.
A full-body sheet that keeps a horse warm while it dries off is called a cooler or a mantle. Horse Bridles A cooler lets a horse cool down without the danger of becoming hypothermic.
Horses need protection from the elements, whether it’s summertime or winter. Horse blankets are made from a variety of materials designed to best suit the weather conditions and keep the animal comfortable. It is important as a horse owner to have a full supply of coverings for seasonal use.
