Horse Bridles
For the assortment of horseback riding styles there are different bridle types to suit the different needs. Used to control a horse, a bridle is an elemental piece of equine equipment. Three parts, the headstall, bit and reins comprise the bridle. Horse Saddles Double bridles use both two sets of reins and two bits, making them the most complicated of bridles. There are bitless bridles known as hackamores that use no bit, using instead a noseband to steer the horse.
A metal rod that fits into the horse’s mouth, a bit is used to steer the horse. Attached to either end of the bit, the reins are dual leather straps held in the rider’s hands. The headstall is the assortment of connected leather straps and buckles that secure it to the horse’s head and keep the bit in its mouth.
English and western are the two basic types of horseback riding styles. Three basic types of bridle are used in the English style. The snaffle bridle is the simplest, using one bit and one set of reins. safety stirrups In the English style, this is the most common type worn by horses. The Pelham bridle is a bit more complicated. The Pelham bit is a singular device, but there are two sets of reins – one for the snaffle end and one for the curb end. The double bridle is the most complicated of bridles. Two bits are used by this bridle. The two bits are known variously as the small snaffle and curb or the bradoon and Weymouth bit. equine nutrition Two sets of reins are used – one for each bit.
Western bridles are typically less complex, for most lack both a browband and a noseband. A small strap of leather that wraps around one or both ears of the horse is used to secure the headstall. Western bridles have one set of reins for control. The hackamore or bitless bridle does use a noseband, however. With a rein attached to each side of the noseband, it puts pressure on the horse’s face, giving the rider control of the animal.
